Semnan Melon Project

Semnan Melon Project

agricultural

Project Location: Semnan
Land Area: 9 acres
Product: Melons
System Type: Drip system via the application of irrigation tape strip in diameter of 16mm and thickness of 200µm laid in rows of 30cm apart. The farm located in Semnan which is mostly under the cultivation of melons was utilizing the traditional irrigation method; however, due to the high rate of wastage in the submerged system and inadequate management of the irrigation operations, the farmer was only able to irrigate 3 acres of the total area of the farmland. Accordingly, after relevant consultation with Polyiran Company and subsequent inspection of the Farm by the Company’s experts, it was decided to have a newer more efficient drip system installed. Consistently, an irrigation tape strip in the diameter of 16mm and thickness of 200µm and lateral length of 250 meters including the water flow rate of 1.3 liters per hour was selected for the project leading to the increase of the Farm’s total cultivation area to 9 acres. Additionally, the Farm could carry out its cultivation operations twice a year in two different seasons, namely spring for the cultivation of melons and summer for the cultivation of maize. Furthermore, the water consumption rate for the Farm is now one third of the submerged method; even though, the total cultivation area has increased.
One of the main advantages of selecting a high lateral length is the reduction in the volume of connections, and the consequent lower implementation costs of the drip irrigation system. Furthermore, by using the drip system, the space that the irrigation system occupies is decreased, whereby the farmer will have more area for plantation and farm machinery operations.
